La mia esperienza erasmus ad Innsbruck: una piccola guida per studenti prossimi alla partenza!

La meravigliosa Innsbruck!

Alla domanda "perchè hai scelto proprio Innsbruck?" una persona sana di mente potrebbe pensare a risposte del tipo:

• bellissimi paesaggi
• possibilità di sciare senza pietà
• imparare il tedesco
• sistema universitario

Volete la verità invece? Ho scelto Innsbruck perchè era la meta più vicina all'Italia, facilmente raggiungibile anche in treno! 
La domanda ora sorge spontanea: perchè tra le tante magnifiche, giuste e razionali motivazioni io avevo proprio quella più irrazionale/idiota/assurda? Semplice: fino ad un paio di anni fa, l'idea di andare all'estero mi terrorizzava e pensavo che non mi sarei mai adattata a vivere in terra straniera e sarei fuggita dopo qualche mese

Povera illusa :P

Comunque sia, in questo post voglio raccontarvi un po' della mia esperienza attraverso alcuni consigli che sicuramente saranno utili a tutti gli erasmus (e non!), cercando di rispondere alle domande che solitamente mi vengono fatte ovvero:

1. Alloggio
2. Costo della vita e come risparmiare
3. Cibo
4. Difficoltà linguistiche
5. Divertirsi
6. Attività particolari

Alloggio
Quando partite come studenti erasmus per trascorrere un periodo in un paese straniero avete sostanzialmente due possibilità: affitto privato/agenzia o dormitorio.
La mia scelta è ricaduta sul dormitorio e, specialmente se non parlate tedesco, vi consiglio caldamente di fare lo stesso :). Oltre al fatto che alloggiare in dormitorio è sicuramente stress saving (niente case da visionare e niente occhi aperti sulle truffe) il vantaggio principale sta nel fatto che conoscerete tantissime persone. I dormitori pullulano di felici studenti erasmus pronti a far festa e non vi sentirete mai soli :)
Inoltre i dormitori hanno il vantaggio di poter essere prenotati online grazie al servizio offerto dalla OeAD.

Il principale svantaggio sta nel fatto che vi verrà richiesto un ingente deposito per bloccare la stanza: io versai 800 euro e mi hanno detto che è addirittura aumentato!

Il dormitorio che ho scelto alla fine è stato il Tirolerheim. L'edificio è praticamente nuovo e le stanze sono minuscole ma in ottime condizioni con bagno privato. La cucina è in comune ma viene pulita ogni giorno. Inoltre, c'è anche un'area barbeque molto carina, una sala musica con un piano forte, una party room e una fitness room con alcuni attrezzi.

E se non siete siete studenti (magari stagisti o lavoratori)? Niente panico, potrebbe ancora essere semplice trovare una sistemazione a distanza.
La rete di studentati Home4student (non so se anche le altre hanno lo stesso regolamento, controllate) accetta anche non studenti in caso di stanze disponibili! Un'altra soluzione (più cara rispetto allo studentato) è la Kolping House: un mio amico ci ha alloggiato in attesa di una sistemazione fissa e mi ha detto di essersi trovato bene:

Se cercate casa nel mercato privato attenzione alle truffe: mai versare soldi senza aver visto prima l'appartamento. Non è raro che vengano affittate via web stanze che in realtà non esistono.
Se volete prenotare a distanza l'unico modo sono i dormitori o gli ostelli: non fidatevi di tutto il resto

Conto in banca e sim per cellulare
Aprire un conto in banca è altamente consigliato: io scelsi la Sparkasse perchè offriva un conto a zero spese per studenti
Riguardo la sim telefonica, in Austria non occorre presentare il proprio documento d'identità o firmare un contratto per ottenerne una. Dato che non avevo necessità particolari decisi di comprare una sim offerta da una delle catene di supermercati presenti ad Innsbruck: Hofer. Inutili dirvi che, ovviamente, si compra nei suddetti supermercati assieme alle ricariche. Onestamente mi sono trovata bene e ho notato che la copertura era abbastanza buona (ma non he ho fatto un grande uso).

Costo della vita e come risparmiare
Il costo della vita ad Innsbruck, confrontato col mio paesino natale vicino Napoli, mi è sembrato decisamente caro. Mi ricordo di quanto fossi letteralmente scioccata dei prezzi dei supermecati durante la prima settimana. Giusto per farvi un piccolo esempio vi dico che in Italia solitamente pago un cespo di lattuga 60 centesimi, 6 uova 80 centesimi/1 euro ed un panino al bar universitario 2.50.
Ad Innsbruck, ho poi scoperto con mia immensa gioia che i prezzi per i medesimi prodotti erano 1.40 per un cespo di lattuga, 2.30 per 6 uova e ben 4 euro per un panino nella panetteria vicino alla mia facoltà (bello grande, ma pur sempre costosissimo).

Un modo per risparmiare sul cibo è quello di tenere d'occhio le offerte settimanali dei supermercati e i prodotti in scadenza: molto spesso potrete trovarli al 50% di sconto.

Anche i trasporti non scherzano e il costo di un biglietto singolo si aggira attorno ai 2.80 se non ricordo male. Il prezzo in parte è giustificato perchè i trasporti funzionano benissimo ed è anche attivo un servizio di trasporto notturno estremamente sicuro.
Se siete studeniti vi consiglio di fare l'abbonamento semestrale (circa 130 euro).
Anche se non siete studenti, potrete usufruire di alcuni abbonamenti mensili convenienti o prendere una bicicletta

Se poi non volete svenarvi con oggettistica per la casa e vestiti ecco una serie di negozi economici

• Primark: catena di abbigliamento made in UK veramente economica!
• Tiger: oggetti per la casa e qualcosa da sgranocchiare.
• Ikea: non ha bisogno di presentazioni :)
• Second hand markets: ci sono molti mercatini dell'usato che vendono vestiti/ oggetti per la casa.
• Tedi: è un bazaar economico di oggetti per la casa e junk food.

Cibo

In Austria ci sono alcuni piatti tipici (penso si trovino anche in Germania/nord Italia) che meritano di essere provati:

• Schnitzel: cotoletta
• Apfel Strudel: mitico strudel di mele spesso accompagnato da salsa alla vaniglia.
• Topfen Strudel: strudel riempito di formaggio fresco quark.
• Spätzle: gnocchetti tirolesi.
• Knödel (canederli): altro tipo di gnocchi.
• Patate lesse ricoperte di panna e verdure: non ricordo il nome preciso però mi è sembrato un piatto tipico perchè veniva servito spesso nei vari locali.
• Panini: alcune volte hanno dei panini deliziosi con salmone, cetrioli, insalata e una salsina tartarta!

Se state riempendo la valigia di sughi e pasta italiana fermatevi! Ad innsbruck è possibile trovare pasta Barilla/Divella, sughi e tantissimi prodotti italiani.

Per quanto riguarda i supermercati, ci sono diverse catene:

• Spar, Billa e Mpreis: sono abbastanza simili.
• Merkur: supermercato austriaco ultracaro; tutti dicono che la qualità del cibo è eccelsa ma io non ho mai provato perchè era al di fuori del mio budget.
• Hofer e Lidl: due discount, ottimi per risparmiare qualche euro. In molti paesi Hofer è conosciuto col nome di Aldi.

Sicurezza
Secondo la mia esperienza Innsbruck è una citta molto sicura. Certo, la stazione di notte non è esattamente il posto migliore dove trovarsi, ma in generale è ok scorrazzare per la città di notte. Basta solo avere un minimo di buon senso


Università
Durante il mio erasmus non ho dato esami, ma ho preparato la mia tesi magistrale! Non saprei dirvi il livello difficoltà dei vari esami ma vi posso dire che ho visto gli altri ragazzi studiare ed impegnarsi (niente cose regalate quindi). La mia esperienza personale di tesi è stata meravigliosa perchè ho trovato un supervisore fantastico e un laboratorio pieno di gente simpaticissima!

Party life
Ecco, diciamo che Innsbruck non è esattamente una città vivissima... Ma da Erasmus non avrete grossi problemi: avrete tantissimi amici e organizzerete con loro le vostre festicciole.
Durante le mie scorribande, i posti che ho frequentato sono stati:

• Haltestelle: drinking bar.
• Hofgarten: discopub nei pressi di un giardino gigante :)
• Limerick: Irish pub.
• Sega bar: altro drinking bar che mi ha fatto piegare in due dalle risate per via del nome.

C'è stato anche un altro discopub, diventato praticamente il simbolo del mio erasmus, dove ho vissuto le avventure più divertenti: lo Stadt cafè! Avete presenti quei posti minuscoli, pieni di gente/olezzo di ascelle pezzate? Ecco, ho reso l'idea :) Purtroppo mi hanno fatto sapere che ha chiuso :(

Sprichst du Deutsch? No? No problem :)
Non conoscere una sola parola di tedesco non è assolutamente un problema per condurre un felice Erasmus: tutti parlano inglese! Certo, se parlate tedesco è tutta un'altra cosa e può essere anche un'ottima occasione per migliorarlo quindi pensateci su.


Sport,  sport, sport!!!
Altolà alla ciccia! I tirolesi sono particolarmente sportivi e ad Innsbruck ci sono un sacco di attività meravigliose: hiking, arrampicate sulle montagne rocciose e meravigliose sciate!
Anche una semplice, lunghissima passeggiata in montagna è decisamente piacevole.

Qualche posto carino da vedere e qualche ristorante degno di nota :)

• Baggersee: lago artificiale molto carino! 
• Inn river: le rive del fiume Inn sono perfette per un picnic o per rilassarvi con gli amici.
• IGLS hotel: un hotel che ho scoperto assieme al mio ragazzo. Mi è piaciuto tantissimo perchè ha una SPA meravigliosa all'interno, il cibo è delizioso e non è nemmeno caro per quello che offre.
• Pizzeria mamma mia: la mia pizzeria preferita :)
• Himal nepali kitchen: se amate il cibo etnico dovete andarci, è squisito!!!!

My Erasmus experience in Innsbruck (Austria)

Wonderful Innsbruck!

I've decided to make my first experience outside Italy in Innsbruck (Austria). Why Innsbruck? Because was the nearest place to Italy and only a year ago I was a small girl really scared about the idea to go outside my country!

I really enjoyed this experience: was the first time far from my family (no more rules!), I made a lot of new friends and I completed my master thesis.

I want to give you some advice about living in Innsbruck as Erasmus student trying to cover the most common questions (accommodation, food, cost of life etc etc)

Housing accommodation
I choose a student dormitory and, especially if you don't speak German, I strongly advise you to do the same.
Why? Well, because it's really stress saving! You don't have to buy any furniture, all the bills are included and you book you room online. If you have to stay only 5/6 months I really think that is the best solution.

What if you are not a student but a postgraduate Erasmus traineeship or young worker? Don't Panic! You can have an accommodation contacting the people of the student dormitory corporation home4student : https://www.home4students.at/en/
I don't know if other housing corporations allows non-student people, but home4student yes because during my stay I met a lot of graduate trainees!

But now let's talk more in detail about my choice: dormitory found thanks to the OeAD service!
The first, really annoying problem, is that you need a really huge deposit for booking a room: around 800 euro!
But, at the end of the stay, me and the other students who didn't destroy their room has received this big deposit back. OeAD will help you to find one of the available dormitory and they will provide you all the support that you will need!

I choose the dorm Tirolerheim (corporation home4students) because was really near my faculty. The building is new, really beautiful and the organisation is really nice! Single rooms have his own private bathroom, the kitchen is cleaned every day and there is a nice barbeque area outside. There is also the music room with a piano, a gym room and a party room.

The rooms are quite small and this dorm is far from city centre (but with bus/bike is not a problem and the bus stop is nearby)! Another disadvantage is that around this dorm there is practically nothing for the nightlife, you need to go to city centre! Furthermore, there are only 3 washing machines and dryer for ALL the building (washing you clothes can be really hard!).
But, at the end, it's a nice place and it's full of Erasmus student: you never feel alone and you will make a lot of friends.

Bank account and mobile sim
During my permanence, I opened a bank account with the bank Sparkasse: they offered a free bank account for students!
Regarding the mobile sim, I bought one Hofer sim card directly in the supermarket: it's cheap and worked nicely for my needings :)


Cost of life and money saving
Compared to my home place in Italy (a small city near Naples) I've found Innsbruck expensive.
Regarding the food, during my first week, I was really impressed with the prices in the supermarkets! Just for give you an idea in Spar (one of the main supermarket chain) iceberg salad was 1.50 euro and 6 eggs more than 2 euro. In my home city in Italy, you can buy the same products for, respectively, 80 cents and 1 euro. Also, fresh sandwiches in bakery near the uni were around 4 euro (In my home university cafeteria just 2.50/2.00)
In Innsbruck, there are many supermarkets chains like Spar, MPraise, Billa and other but I suggest you to try the discounts chains like Hofer and Lidl for saving money.
Other than supermarkets, there are also fresh local markets that represent a good way for buying great quality fruit, veg and eggs for less price.
Also always take a look at the discounts of the week in the supermarkets (you can find it online): there are many nice offers like buy 3 and pay 2 et similia.
Don't forget to look for the product with a near expiring date: you can save up to 50%!

For the transport I strongly advise you to make the semester tickets for students! In Innsbruck the transportation service is excellent (there is also a night service) but not cheap: the single ticket was around 2.70! Even if you are not a student  I suggest you a monthly ticket or a bike: they are really more affordable.

For housing items and clothes there are some famous cheap chains that can help you for saving money like

• Primark (clothes and house items)
• Tiger (house items)
• Ikea ( description not needed :P)
• Second-hand markets

Delicious food to try

Tirolean cuisine is not bad ant there are things that need to be tried:

• Schnitzel: fried meat coated with flour, beaten eggs and breadcrumbs
• ApfelStrudel: apple strudel a must!
• TopfenStrudel: strudel filled with quark cheese
• Spätzle
• Knodel
• Baked potatoes filled with cream and vegetables: I don't remember the exact name, sorry!!
• Sandwiches: at the end they are not so special. But in Italy I was used to completely different sandwiches and I really enjoyed new tastes like the one with smoked salmon, cucumber, onions, salad and tartare sauce!

Regarding the supermarkets, there are many different chains in Innsbruck:

• Spar, Billa, Mpreis: I didn't note many differences about them...
• Merkur: this is an austrian chain supermaket, I never bought anything because it's really expensive (but the quality is high)!
• Hofer and Lidl: two discounts nice for saving money. 

Safety
I've found Innsbruck really safe. Ok, maybe the station during the night is not exactly the safest place but, in general, is completely ok going around also in the night. Just having a minimum of common sense.
I also found that the police is really efficient and quick.


University
During my Erasmus, I've made only the master's thesis and not the exams. What I've heard from the other students is that exams in the university of Innsbruck are not gifted! You need to follow class and study if you want to pass them.

Sprichst du Deutsch? No? No problem :)
Speaking only English it's not a problem in Innsbruck: in general, everyone speaks a nice English and it's easy to communicate. Of course, it's a nice opportunity to learn German but if you can't don't be afraid of it.


Sport,  sport, sport!!!
If you are a sporty person you will love Innsbruck: plenty of places for hiking and beautiful mountains for climbing o skiing
The triolein loves to make sport and stays healthy and there are a lot of sports activity that you can join!
If you don't have proper clothes for skiing you can rent it or buy in a second-hand market (called flea market).


Party life
That is not a good point: Innsbruck is not a so big city! But, if you are Erasmus, you will find a lot of friends! You will go outside with them, organise parties with them so it's not a problem ;) You will have fun!
During my Erasmus, I've spent my wild night in

• Haltestelle: nice drinking bar.
• Hofgarten: it's a disco pub near a big garden ;).
• Limerick: normal irish pub.
• Sega bar: another drinking bar.

I've spent also much time in STADT Cafè: the typical discopub for students but many friends of mine told me that it has been closed :(

Some nice place to see and nice place where to eat!

• Baggersee: an artificial lake really nice. Is possible to swim in the lake and do many other activities like barbecue or volleyball
• Inn river: nice for having a picnic with friends and relaxing.
• IGLS hotel: it's not cheap but I've spent a night with my boyfriend (I'm a lucky girl :)) they have the SPA and the food was delicious!!!!
• Pizzeria mamma mia: it has been the best pizza ate in Innsbruck
• Himal nepali kitchen: an amazing ethnic restaurant my favourite

Even the Erasmus can fail!

Erasmus.
This word sounds like magic.
It doesn't matter the country, the field of study or the purpose of the experience: just mention the word Erasmus and everything will be perfect!

Unfortunately, sometimes something can go wrong and even the Erasmus, like all the experiences of your life, can fail.

Let's start with a positive thought: what are the ingredients of a perfect Erasmus? For me:

1. You reached your academic goals: Erasmus = party but don't forget that its main aim is *to study* (such a bad word eh?).
2. You had a lot of fun!
3. You improved yourself: more independence, more open minded.
4. You started to share the phrase: "the diversity is beauty".
5. You are still alive and alcohol didn't kill you :D.

But what are the reasons that can make the Erasmus dream a nightmare? Why sometimes there are students that last minute decide to stay at home? Here are some:

1. Money: try to be realistic about your budget (especially if is the first time that you live with your own money). Life can be expensive especially in a country like Uk or Denmark. Before choosing the destination, search about the cost of life: food, accommodation, etc etc and ask yourself if you can really pay everything.
2. Hard integration: the first 1/2 weeks can be a tragedy especially if you don't speak properly the required language. Don't worry, everything will improve soon, but sometimes some people feel that this is a huge problem that they can't solve and they decide to come back home
3. Fear: some students can be scared about the fact that everything will be different (and you will leave in you home country all friends and the partner). This reason is really common in my university and because of it some students can decide to stay at home.
4. Inability to complete exams or placement: I'm not talking about being drunk a mess every night  and consequently too tired the next morning for the classes XD. I want to talk about the unexpected situations. The secret to avoiding this kind of problems is looking for as much information as possible! If you want to make exams during you Erasmus, look for information on the website of the university: 
1. Maybe there are some rules that don't exist in your home institution
2. The exams could be completely different from what you are used to
3. Check the level of difficulty: be sure that the exams will not be too hard for you
In my home university in Italy, for example, we don't need to enrol the courses in which we are interested. In many international universities can be required, but the Erasmus students don't know, don't enrol anything and they realise (once arrived) that they can't follow any class. If you want to make a thesis or a placement try to communicate with your abroad supervisor before the departure. Try to understand if he/she really has some interesting topic for you or just want to make contacts with you home university :). It's really sad to realise, once you arrived, that there are unexpected problems that will ruin everything.

I have to admit that, in most of the cases, Erasmus it's a really nice experience, so don't worry: you will enjoy it!!!

Anche l'Erasmus può fallire!

Erasmus.
Questa parola sembra possedere qualcosa di magico.
Non importa la destinazione, il percorso di studi o la natura del soggiorno: è sufficiente che sia un Erasmus e tutto sarà meraviglioso!

Eppure non è sempre così e anche l'Erasmus, come tutte le esperienze della vostra vita, potrebbe rivelarsi deludente e fallimentare...

Quali sono i segnali che avete appena terminato un indimenticabile erasmus? Bhè eccone alcuni:

1. Avete raggiunto degli obiettivi a livello didattico/formativo: Erasmus = festa, ma non dimenticatevi che lo scopo principale dovrebbe essere quello di *studiare* (parola tanto antipatica). Se non avete combinato niente a livello universitario/formativo diciamo che vi siete concessi una bella vacanza, ma non l'Erasmus!
2. Vi siete divertiti
3. Avete migliorato voi stessi: capacità relazionali, apertura mentale, autonomia etc etc
4. Avete capito quanto possa essere vera la frase: "la diversità è bellezza"..
5. Siete ancora vivi, illesi, capaci d'intendere e di volere e l'alcool non vi ha causato troppi danni :D

Perchè alcune volte le cose non funzionano e gli studenti/tirocinanti decidono d'interrompere il soggiorno o, addirittura, di non partire proprio? Cercherò di riportarvi qui quali sono i principali motivi che potrebbero rendere il tanto sognato Erasmus un incubo dal quale non vedrete l'ora di svegliarvi!

1. Economico: specialmente se non si è abituati ad autofinanziarsi si potrebbe sottovalutare l'aspetto economico. Cercate di fare una stima realistica del vostro budget ed informatevi sul costo della vita del paese che andrete a visitare. Cercate in anticipo il costo dei dormitori (se disponibili), del cibo e dei trasporti. 
2. Difficoltà ad integrarsi: non è facile adattarsi ad ambienti diversi e culture diverse. Specialmente se parlate male la lingua richiesta, il primo mese sarà un incubo! Non desistete, le cose all'inizio sembrano insostenibili ma poi migliorano! Non pensate di tornare subito a casa dopo le prime 2/3 settimane.Prendete anche in considerazione le caratteristiche basilari del paese dove andrete a stare: se odiate il freddo magari evitate la Danimarca :D.
3. Paura: "paura di cosa?!?" starete pensando! Eppure ci sono alcune persone che, poco prima di partire, si fanno assalire da mille dubbi (mi troverò bene? e se perdo solo tempo?) e decidono di rinunciare ancor prima di provarci.
4. Impossibilità di raggiungere gli obiettivi didattici/formativi prefissati: questa motivazione potrà sembrarvi assurda e magari potreste pensare che sia solo relativa al vostro comportamento (troppe feste, mancanza di voglia di studiare, etc etc). In realtà la cosa potrebbe essere più complessa. La parola chiave per evitare spiacevoli sorprese è INFORMARSI: non crediate che i vostri tutor italiani vi aiuteranno su tutto, dovrete fare da soli. Se partite per dare degli esami informatevi sulle modalità di svolgimento dell'istituzione estera! Non è sempre vero che gli esami in Erasmus sono regalati e ci potrebbero essere alcune regole, non presenti in Italia, che potrebbero darvi noie (esempio: obbligo di prenotare gli esami con un certo anticipo, pena il non poter seguire NULLA). Se partite per tesi/tirocinio pretendente di essere messi in contatto, già dall'Italia, con i vostri futuri supervisori. Nessuno vi assicura che l'ente estero si prenderà cura di voi, vi farà fare cose interessanti e non abbia stipulato l'accordo Erasmus per mantere dei ponti con qualche prof universitario :). Se il vostro tutor italiano si rifiuta di darvi un contatto, fate da voi senza chiedere. Se dall'altra parte non vi sembrano gentili e disponili rimanete a casa oppure cambiate meta.

Tipicamente gli imprevisti non mancano mai e devo ammettere che in tutti gli erasmus che ho visto concludersi prima del tempo ho notato la concomitanza di molti dei fattori che vi ho scritto.

Diciamo che forse questo articolo è un po' catastrofico: in generale l'Erasmus è una bellissima esperienza!

I also visited Germany and the United Kingdom.

Thanks to my two Erasmus, I've acquired a lot of experience about living in different places and I want to share information for helping other students or people that want to move to another country.
I also want to talk about beautiful landscapes, amazing foods and extraordinary cultures about the places that I've visited. The life is not always easy and I also want talk about all the problems that I've encountered living in a foreign country.
I want to make this blog a diary of my life for remember all the beautiful memories and share all the future experiences.

This blog is bilingual because I'm Italian and, as probably you know, Italy is not exactly an English-speaking country and for me it's really important also to help all the Italian people.

I'm sorry, my English probably will be not perfect, but I hope that you'll find here some useful information!

Benvenuti nel mio blog!

Chi diavolo sono? :D Sono una ragazza da poco laureata in informatica che ha deciso di viaggiare e vedere l'Europa!
Attualmente vivo in Olanda, l'anno scorso ho trascorso un periodo in Austria e presto sarò a Parigi.
Ho anche visitato la Germania e l'Inghilterra!

Grazie ai miei due Erasmus, ho avuto infatti la possibilità di conoscere culture nuove e la fortuna di capire che, effettivamente, la diversità è bellezza :)
La vita però non è tutta rose e fiori e mi sono anche scontrata con tutti quei problemi che si presentano nel momento in cui decidete di vivere in un paese straniero (e siete magari studenti squattrinati).

In questo blog voglio raccogliere le mie esperienze riguardo la mia vita in Europa: spero di aiutare altri studenti Erasmus e altre persone che vogliono intraprendere un percorso simile. Voglio però anche parlare di luoghi diversi, cibi da provare e culture dei posti che ho visitato.
Voglio fare di questo blog un piccolo diario della mia vita per ricordare i bellissimi momenti passati e condividere le difficoltà e le gioie che incontrerò in futuro!

Questo blog verrà scritto in due lingue: italiano ed inglese. Durante le mie ricerche, infatti, ho scoperto che non siamo solo noi italiani ad avere mille dubbi e preoccupazioni quando partiamo per un paese straniero!
